BitTorrent is a torrent program.
Torrent is a method of downloading huge files from various sources so that you can get it faster. So what you do is you download a teenie file with a .torrent extension and BitTorrent reads it. The file says all of the places you can download pieces of a bigger file. BitTorrent takes that file and starts downloading a few of the little pieces at once from different locations. After they are done it starts on a new batch of pieces and so on until the file is downloaded. Now because all of the pieces are coming from different locations, the download goes much faster.
Great, right?
It was just that until a whole lot of illegal things (full versions of pay-ware software) started getting distributed by them. The only reason it’s not on the list is because of these files. But saying ‘don’t use bittorrent to download stuff’ is like saying ‘don’t drive because bank robbers use cars as getaway vehicles’.
I used BitTorrent to download the huge and infamous NavyField installer in about 30 min.
